Irene Hallie Mentzel passed away in New York City on June 23, 2021 at age 92.
Hallie was born in 1929 in New York City. She was a second-generation New Yorker, the daughter of Miriam and Dr. Leopold Jaches. Dr. Jaches was a radiologist, and was instrumental in starting the radiology department at Mount Sinai Hospital. Hallie attended the Dalton School
from nursery school through high school. She worked at B. Altman during her high school years.
Hallie attended Barnard College, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in biology. In 1951, she married Alvin J. Mentzel (Al). Al was a WWII veteran and CPA who worked for Price Waterhouse Coopers. They lived in New York City until 1967, when they moved to Maplewood, N.J. Hallie and Al moved back to New York City in 1980, and subsequently moved to West Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard, where they lived until Al died in 2006. Hallie moved back to New York City in 2009. Hallie and Al enjoyed extensive travel within the U.S. and internationally.
Hallie worked and did volunteer work for Planned Parenthood, League of Women Voters, National Council of Jewish Women, and as a trustee for the West Tisbury Free Public Library.
Hallie is survived by her son Anthony, and her daughters Andrea and Nina.
