Woman saved after nearly drowning

A woman nearly drowned at Lucy Vincent Beach late Sunday morning. Chilmark beach superintendent Martina Mastromonaco called it a “fluke accident” near shore.

“Bystanders pulled her out of the water,” Mastromonaco said and then her lifeguard staff provided first aid.

“I couldn’t be prouder of my staff,” she said. “All of our training just kicked in.”

Chilmark Fire Chief Jeremy Bradshaw said his department used an ATV as part of its response. Chief Bradshaw said Chilmark Police Officer Liz Rogers assisted with lifesaving measures.

Aquinnah Police also assisted in the response, Mastromonaco said. The victim was eventually airlifted from the Vineyard, Mastromonaco said.

Mastromanoco said she and her staff are praying for a full recovery.

“We’re hopeful,” she said.
