Heard on Main Street: Friendship doubles our joys and divides our sorrows.

Our neighborhood turkeys know that it is nearly Valentine’s Day. Early in the morning, there were eight Toms in fully flared tail feathers, chasing three hens who were squawking loudly in my front yard.

I began this month with a shock by losing my internet. Not just annoying, but interfering with my life. The bonus was my son came to visit for the weekend. He rescued my internet and my phone service. It is annoying to lose either of these, but the phone seemed harder to me.
That is because I have a new cell phone, and it is simply awful. I didn’t believe it was possible, but the issues seem to get worse the longer I have it. With no warning, the screen has suddenly changed to an indescribable thing, and I have no idea how to fix it. My son thinks the other complaints I have are just the changes in all the new phones. But I did feel isolated, and very uncomfortable with the situation.

My birthday is later this month, so I received a card from a childhood friend with some photos I had sent her when my children were young. What fun! Then another girlfriend from school days sent me a picture of a guy who still looks just like he did in fourth grade. She also sent a photo of my Girl Scout troop from those days. I was surprised because I had one of me with a few of my close friends, but this was different.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum exhibit called “Ferry Tales” will only be on view until March 2. Learn about the Island ferries, from Abraham Chase’s sail ferry in the 18th century and the elegant White Fleet propeller steamers of the 1920s, to the beloved Islander that served the Vineyard for more than 50 years. See ship models, memorabilia, historical documents, and photos, and the history of ferry service to the Island from the 1700s to today. Fee.

“The Importance of Being Earnest,” a presentation of the National Theatre Live, will be shown at the M.V. Film Center on Saturday, Feb 2, at 1 pm. It’s described as a
delightful reimagining of Oscar Wilde’s celebrated comedy.” Get your tickets early.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out belatedly for last week to James O’Donnell, _Jainaba Burton-Sundman, Judy Pachico, Simone Davis, Eli Hanschka, and Nat Benjamin.

My lovely granddaughter Fiona parties today, though knowing her it will last all weekend.

Happy birthday to Chris Morse tomorrow; just know he will get lots of hearts. Grace Burton-Sundman celebrates on Saturday, and Izzy Wajda on Sunday. And for two other special people, best wishes to Carrie Tankard next Tuesday, and Peter Palches on Wednesday.
