Heard on Main Street: Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
I had a sad conversation with an old friend this week. Johanna Robichau had news about her husband, Joe Robichau, an Islander. He is not doing well; he is now living at Sunrise of Newton, a care facility. A card could be sent to 431 Washington St., Newton MA 02458.
I hadn’t paid much attention, just felt a bit annoyed with the noise of leaf blowers when they worked for several neighbors at the same time. I soon became unhappy with how long it went on, as they moved down the street. Then I noticed the guys at the house behind me were merrily blowing those leaves into my yard. Finally, something I could complain about!
An Island-wide discussion of town bylaws about banning gas leaf blowers will be on Saturday, March 29, at 1:30 pm. The bylaw will reduce air and noise pollution, and will be voted on at each town meeting. Come to discuss the proposed bylaw at the Oak Bluffs library.
Measles is again a serious problem. I was happy to learn that adults born earlier than 1957 likely had measles as a child, and are considered immune. But I understand that shots given after 1957 may require a booster now.
“Vineyard Retrospective” by Island photographer Paul Doherty is on display in the lobby of the M.V. Playhouse through April 18. The Wicked Good Musical Revue will be at the Playhouse on April 11, 12 and 13, Friday and Saturday at 7 pm, and Sunday at 2 pm, with David Behnke, Molly Conole, Leslie Guzman, Katherine Reid, and Ken Romero, and special guest Aiden Weiland. They will be accompanied by musicians Peter Boak, Molly Sturges, and Brian Weiland, and musical director David Behnke.
Noavakay Knight, a fashion designer and Vineyard native, has a new business in Western Massachusetts. Her company, Anu, reclaims cashmere and wool from recycling and transforms these into functional and sustainable kids’ clothing. Morrice Florist will host them in a pop-up show on Friday, April 11, from 3 to 5 pm for a meet and greet with light snacks, and on Saturday, April 12, from 10 to 4 during their business hours.
Discovery Days at the M.V. Museum offers weeklong summer programs for children entering grades 1–6, with interactive activities that bring Martha’s Vineyard’s history to life. Sessions begin July 8. My granddaughters used to love those.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out tomorrow to Linda Unczur and Dale McClure. Wish the best on Saturday to Kaleena Searle and Kathleen Madeiros. Sunday belongs to Larry Sylvia and Marco Daniels. Happy birthday to Tom Zinno on Wednesday.
