Heard on Main Street: One thing you can’t recycle is wasted time.

For little ones, Storytimes by our Vineyard Haven library are twice a week at 10 am, on Mondays and Tuesdays at Grace Church. Come Monday for a traditional storytime with Weezie, and on Tuesday for a story circle with music and movement with Aria. They may be held outside in the amphitheater, in nice weather.

I continue to enjoy McCullough’s “History Matters.” In one of the last few essays in the “On Writing” collection, you find many suggestions for writers. He says, “Follow your curiosity. Our curiosity is what separates us from the cabbages.” And he recommends a very long list of books. I am inclined to go back now and enjoy a few of these essays again.

McCullough’s daughter Dorie will speak about “History Matters” on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 5 pm, at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum; fee.

Are you having problems with your telephone landline? The time that mine shows usually is wrong. Lately it is about 40 minutes slow. Fortunately, the time is about the only thing my cell phone does right.

But sometimes my landline phone rings, sometimes it doesn’t. Last week a visiting friend sat in my living room, called me once, no ring, but she left a message. The second time the phone rang. At least I had a witness that it was not my imagination. And it did record the message. But now I ask my friends to call back right away, which usually works. Or leave a message, so I can call back, when the older phones flashes. Other than regularly checking the phone, this is my only notice.

My husband’s grandfather, George G. Gifford of West Tisbury, drew the town seal and was the first town clerk, serving for 50 years. He ran a general store, selling everything from button shoes to groceries. But he was also an artist, painting colorful greeting cards and scenic landscapes, which he gave to friends and family members as wedding gifts.

This week a much younger George G. Gifford, a cousin to our children, called from his home in New York. He said his son ran an art business, and had found and given his father two paintings signed by his West Tisbury ancestor. We do have the one gifted by the original George G. Gifford to his daughter, my husband’s mother, Beatrice Gifford Mayhew. There was no information on where these came from.

Happy anniversary tomorrow to our daughter, Laurel Mayhew, and Kevin Olson, and on Sunday to Joe and Susan Canha. Congratulations go on Wednesday to Sofya and Sandy Nadelstein.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go on Friday to Kathy Ivory. Saturday belongs to Ashleen Cafarelli, Eric B. Davison, and Dr. Jason Lew. Greetings on Sunday to Tristan Israel and Julie Immelt Whelden.
