If anyone believes that the off-season starts in October, they are sorely mistaken, in my opinion. Edgartown has been packed with visitors, events, and lively conversations on Main Street.
On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, spend the afternoon at the fifth annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration and commemoration, organized by Wôpanâak nonprofit Sassafras Earth Education, in collaboration with local Wôpanâak speakers, drummers, musicians, and Felix Neck. This event is free and open to the public, and happens on Sunday, the 12th, from 2 to 4 pm at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary.
Events keep popping up, and this foodie loves these two she’s about to mention: Both the Harbor View Hotel and the Winnetu Oceanside Resort are hosting food and wine experiences/dinners (Oct. 17 and 18) to fill the hungry stomachs of local and visiting foodies this month!
First up, the Harbor View Hotel is hosting its annual “Food and Wine Dinner at Bettini: A Culinary Trio” on the 17th, from 5 to 9 pm, with culinary creations prepared by celebrity Chef Jon Ashton of Martha’s Vineyard, guest Chef Alex Pineda of Qué Mas in Beverly, and Executive Chef Juan Martinez of Bettini Restaurant. It’ll be an elegant five-course dinner showcasing the talent of all these chefs, and a must-not-miss.
At the Winnetu Oceanside Resort, the culinary team is hosting four events all together on Oct. 17 and 18: an oyster-centric event called “Ahh Shucks,” showcasing Cottage City Oysters, paired with rosé and champagne, and a dessert-based event called “A Sweet Soiree,” crafted by James Beard semi-finalist pastry chef and friend, Sofia Tejeda (I’ve already booked my tickets for this!). The next event is unique: a lunch with a side of standup comedy with Craig Geraghty. I love seeing the intersection of food and comedy, so this should be fun. Actor, comedian, and owner of Block Island Seafood Co., Craig seems to know his way around seafood and laughter, so I can’t wait to report back on this event as well. Last but not least, a Basque Region Dinner, with Chef Richard Doucette leading this five-course menu inspired by Northern Spain. Incredible.
For both hotel events, more details can be found on their respective websites.
Overall, October is off to a great start. The town is also transforming into a lovely autumnal scene, with shops like Nell and Salte, among others, dressing up their storefronts with mums and pumpkins galore. As someone from a Caribbean island, the change of seasons still makes me marvel, even after 15 years of living on this New England Island. Appreciate the small moments, and remember to send me your news at marnely@gmail.com.
Happy birthday shout-outs go out to Dara Eckler on Oct. 10, Dan Deslauriers on Oct. 13, and Kristen Gosselin on Oct. 14 — wishing you all a fantastic day!
