The freight ferry Woods Hole docked in Woods Hole. —Eunki Seonwoo

The Steamship Authority freight ferry Woods Hole will be headed to Fairhaven for repair over a bad bearing.

Sean Driscoll, Steamship Authority communications director, said a “bad bearing associated with the steering motor for [the] bow thruster” of the Woods Hole needs to be replaced. Driscoll said it’s “unknown” why the bearing went bad.

The boat is scheduled to be moved to the Steamship repair facility in Fairhaven. According to VesselFinder, the site utilized by the Steamship Authority for its online vessel tracker, the ferry had been docked in Woods Hole since Wednesday.

The Steamship Authority has been using another freight ferry, the Aquinnah, to run the Woods Hole’s route. It is uncertain when the Woods Hole will come back into service.
