Eleanor Mone, senior captain of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School girls’ varsity hockey team, surpassed the coveted 100-point barrier at a home game against Barnstable High School on Saturday.

The girls dominated Barnstable 11–3.

Head Coach Mallory Watts, who has coached Mone all four years of high school, said that watching Mone improve each year makes her proud.

“She always works really hard,” said Watts. “She’s such a team player, such a playmaker on the ice. She sees the ice really well, and she has a great understanding of the game and space awareness.”

Watts said Mone earned this achievement not only because she is a great teammate on and off the ice, but because she isn’t afraid to be gritty.

“She celebrates other people’s wins, and not only that, but she can score,” said Watts. “She’s happy to take any goal. It doesn’t have to be the prettiest goal always. It can be an ugly goal, too. She’ll battle in front of the net and get those rebounds.”

Mone is the first player in over a decade to reach the 100 point goal. The last girls’ player to tally the points was Aubrey Ashmen in 2014.

With nine games remaining on the Vineyard team’s schedule, and a strong chemistry with her linemates, Mone said she didn’t feel too much pressure on Saturday against Barnstable.

“With my line mates, Abby [Geary] and Mackenna [Metell], I know that they’ll always do something –– whether it was me or them, I knew something would happen,” said Mone before practice on Tuesday.

On the play that earned her the 100-point achievement, Mone said she received a pass on the breakout from their defensive zone, skated it through the neutral zone and into Barnstable’s offensive zone, where she made a cross-ice pass to Metell, who took it to the net and scored.

“It feels good, I feel very happy,” said Mone of her achievement. “It was a long time in the making.”

Mone said she realized she was within reach of the 100-point goal last season, but it wasn’t until this season when she was at 90 points that she knew she was going to reach it. She said she couldn’t have done it without the support of her teammates and coaches.

“We still had over half the season left, and I was like, ‘Oh, I might be able to do this,’ but I tried not to get my hopes up,” said Mone. “The only reason I’m getting these points is because every year, whoever I’m on the ice with, my line and also the D [defensemen] can get me the puck, and then I can either give it to someone else, or I’m able to shoot and score.”

“Jaime [Forend] and Mallory [Watts] and all my coaches have helped me, because they make me better every year. I get better and can score more points,” she added.

Mone has played for the varsity hockey team since she was a freshman. With 20 games a season, Mone reached her 100-point achievement in roughly 80 games, Watts and Forend, coaches of the team, said.

“Four years, 80 games, and getting 100 points, it’s really good,” said Watts.

The girls’ hockey team is currently 5–7 this season, their next matchup is at home against Marshfield High School on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 2 pm. They played the Falmouth High School Clippers at the Martha’s Vineyard Ice Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 3 pm, after our print deadline.
