Last weekend the streets on the Island were crowded with many of the big tour buses. One tour group included a number of passengers from England who happily shopped in our stores. The towns had lots of visitors from all over the country and several from Canada. Of course, there were a number of wedding celebrations as well. Many of our summer friends were down to close their places for the winter.

Tomorrow you have another chance to see Gone Girl starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike at the MV Film Center at 7:30 pm. Last week’s viewing sold out. It will also be shown on Saturday at 4 pm and Sunday at 7:30 pm. The film unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage. On his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne reports that his beautiful wife, Amy, has gone missing.Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits, and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?

On Saturday from 12 noon to 3 pm the First Baptist Church will sponsor the first annual Oktoberfest on the corner of Spring and William Streets. There will be sausages and hot dogs, homemade sauerkraut, and root beer for sale as well as an Oompah Band providing music. Kids can enjoy games such as the water balloon throw, lucky ducks, and prizes, even a puppet show at 2 pm. Vendors will offer crafts, new clothing, baked goods and fresh produce.

Also on Saturday morning the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard invites you to enjoy the Walk for the Animals with a Halloween twist at Tradewinds Park. The rain date is Sunday. Bring your pet in costume. Park and register at the Oak Bluffs School where the course starts and ends. Prizes for best costume will be awarded, according to the age of the person who created the costume: ages 12 and under, 13 to 19, and 20 and up.

Anyone who likes to walk is welcome, whether you have a pet or not. Start walking between 10 am and 12 noon. The flat course winds through the woods along the old landing strip with cutoffs if you want to do a short version. Water will be available for humans and pets along the way. Art in the Stacks provides the opportunity for artists to show their work and for Vineyard Haven Library patrons to enjoy art throughout the year. Paintings by Harry Seymour, a part-time resident, are on display this month on the library’s Art Wall on the lower level. He draws upon the beauty of Martha’s Vineyard and his African-American cultural experiences for inspiration. His work was recently selected as part of the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital’s permanent art collection.

There is no end to the wonders at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center. Susan Klein and Alan Brigish invite you to the premiere of their latest collaboration Now & Zen: A Window on Beauty. This is the first of a series of multimedia shows we are developing, together with local talented composers and musicians.

A wine and cheese reception, the opening exhibit, and multimedia show will be on Sunday, October 26, at 3 pm, followed by a movie. Featured are the best of Alan’s collection of images from journeys on the Vineyard and to the far reaches of the world with his camera. Also showing will be the first multimedia production by Alan and Susan in the lobby. The second Impermanence will debut prior to the main movie that day. Thursday is the first night of the MV Food and Wine Festival, which kicks off with Fresh off the Farm at the Ag hall, a celebration of Vineyard farmers and chefs, and rolls through Friday, Saturday and Sunday with wine and food events for all. More info at: MVFoodandWine.com.
