Stephen Searle (“Steve”) died peacefully on April 16, 2026, at Navigator Homes in Edgartown, with his sister Georgia Morris and brother-in-law Len Morris at his side. He was 81 years old.
Steve grew up in Ocean City, N.J., with Georgia and their parents, Jane and Herbert Searle, formerly of Vineyard Haven. The sound of rolling ocean waves accompanied him most of his life; he grew up at the seashore, and spent his last 20 years on the Vineyard. Steve always had a love of sports, and survived a lifelong passion for the ups and downs of the Philadelphia Phillies. He played on the Island softball league, graduating to scorekeeper, and was featured by The Martha’s Vineyard Times in a photo captioned, “Affable Steve Searle keeps the score.”
Steve graduated with a degree in philosophy from Wake Forest University, and had varied work experiences, from sports journalism in his 20s to work in a newspaper-printing business to periods of travel, and finally work at the Tisbury landfill, instructing residents where to distribute their recyclables.
Steve is survived by Georgia and Len; his nephew Sam Morris, and Sam’s fiancée Nathalie Biddle; niece Lily Morris and her husband Gavriel Cohen; and great-nephew Zev. Steve had many friends on the Vineyard, living in Vineyard Haven, and at Windemere and Navigator Homes, where he was surrounded by loving care. Donations in Steve’s memory can be made to Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, online at mvcommunityservices.org/donate, which has helped him in his life’s journey.
