Heavy rain and choppy seas impacted travel for many on the Vineyard Tuesday.

While the National Weather Service forecast the Island would see less than two inches of rain Tuesday at most, Vineyard Haven was hit hard with flooding at Five Corners and a stretch of Beach Road. Both are major transportation routes, especially to the Vineyard Haven port where the Steamship Authority operates. All Steamships trips were diverted from Oak Bluffs to Vineyard Haven due to weather conditions.

The rainwater levels lapped over sidewalks along Beach Road as early as 9 am, and some stores closed early.

Tisbury Police posted that Beach Road was temporarily closed from Five Corners to the town landing. According to the Tuesday morning post, three cars had already broken down and “multiple more license plates ripped off in the puddles.”

“This is for everyone’s safety,” the post read. Around noon on Tuesday, the road was back open.

The weather conditions also led several ferry lines to cancel trips, including New Bedford-based Seastreak and the Falmouth Edgartown Ferry, both of which cited forecasts of high winds and rough seas. The National Weather Service forecast gusts of 30 mph on Tuesday.
