On New Year’s Day, Lazy Frog and Offshore Ale Co. hosted the seventh annual New Year’s Day Disc Golf Tournament at the Martha’s Vineyard Riverhead Disc Golf Course in Oak Bluffs. The 33º weather didn’t stop 57 players from coming out to try their luck on the course. The tournament started at Offshore with breakfast sandwiches and the indoor Ring of Fire competition, followed by a long-distance throwing competition at Ocean Park and 27 holes of disc golf (frisbee disc or frisbee golf to some) at the course.

This year’s tournament concluded with an award ceremony back at Offshore, where players were awarded various gifts from Offshore and Lazy Frog, including gift certificates and apparel. Winners included Paul Cotton in first place and for longest distance, Luke Brewer in second place, Todd Hitchings in third place, and Glen Gaskill for the King of Mediocrity award, for having the most average score.

Offshore owner Phil McAndrews and Lazy Frog owner Jake Gifford started the event seven years ago with only eight players. “It’s a fun way to start the new year, and it’s something to do outside,” said Mr. McAndrews.

Offshore’s Lazy Frog I.P.A., a collaboration between the two, was launched two years ago and was inspired by the game. A portion of the ale’s proceeds benefit MV Disc Golf, which provides funding for disc golf on the Island including the maintenance of Riverhead course; the course is operated solely by donations and volunteers. Last year sales of the ale raised $1,996.88 for MV Disc Golf.

New participants interested in playing disc golf on the Island can check out the friendly Sunday morning league, every Sunday at 10 am at Martha’s Vineyard Riverhead Disc Golf Course in Oak Bluffs. The league is for all ages, and beginners are welcome. Disc golf discs are available for sale on the Island at Offshore Ale Co. store, Lazy Frog, Trader Fred’s, and Airport Mobil.
