To the Editor:

Charles Blank died last Wednesday, April 8, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, after a long time of failing health. His wife, Nancy, daughter Rebecca and her family, and their son Nicholas, who arrived on Tuesday from China, were at his side.

Charles loved this Island, and visited every summer of his married life until he finally retired here. Everyone who knew him, even for a while, became his friend. Among his favorite places were the Jetty Beach, Linda Jean’s, Sailing Camp Park, the Tisbury Senior Center, and the Campground. He enjoyed walks, but only outside. A treadmill was not his idea of walking.

He loved his family and friends, reading, chess, music, art, animals in need, and entertaining. He never passed up a good movie. He left us with many happy memories, and lots of laughter. He will be fondly remembered by his piano students, friends from every corner of the Island, and all who went to his music classes at the Senior Center. He recently added to that list the medical staff of the ICU. Somewhere, he is beating someone at chess while enjoying a root beer float!

We will not see the likes of him again very soon.
