The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys and girls indoor track teams competed Jan. 4 at Wheaton College in an Eastern Athletic Conference (EAC) meet against the West Bridgewater Wildcats and Southeastern Hawks.
The boys defeated both schools, winning 64-36 over West Bridgewater and 70-29 over Southeastern. The girls earned a split on the day, losing narrowly to the Wildcats 52-48 and downing the Hawks 66-17.
In the boys meet, Nevin Wallis remained undefeated this season in both the 600 meters and the high jump, and placed second in the long jump. Aivaras Gedvilas won the mile run and the 1000 meters. Nick Bonneau was tops in the 55-meter hurdles, and second in the 300 meters and the high jump. Nathaniel Packer, ranked second in the EAC in the shot put, won the event against both schools.
For the Vineyard girls, Mackenzie Condon won the 55-meter hurdles. She also qualified for the state meet with a 4-foot, 10-inch leap in the high jump and a second-place finish in the long jump. Pearl Vercruysse won the mile run with an EAC best time of 5:32, and added a win in the 1000 meters to back up her No. 2 conference ranking in the event. Addy Hayman qualified for states by winning the long jump with an EAC best mark of 15 feet, 11.5 inches, and finished second in the 300 meters.
Vineyard Coach Joe Schroeder was pleased with the effort of both teams and praised the girls for raising their game with standout Livy Smith missing from the lineup. “The girls really stepped up in her absence,” he said.
The Vineyarders are back at Wheaton on Wednesday, Jan. 11, for a meet against EAC heavyweights Bishop Feehan.
