The Vision Council meeting about Tisbury street improvements has moved to Thursday, Feb. 23. The discussion will be at the Tisbury Senior Center from 7 to 8:30 pm. Your comments and ideas are important for the future of our town.

Take back those overdue books and feed some hungry children. The Vineyard Haven library accepts Food for Fines through February and March. Pay your overdue fines with canned goods or healthy nonperishable food items. These must be unopened, current items only. Do check the expiration dates. One item or more waives each $2 in fines, and applies only to late fees. All the food will be given to the Island Food Pantry.

This is definitely the right time of year for enjoying books. Our library benefits from the Mini Book Sale on Saturday morning, Feb. 18, from 10 to noon.

I’ve got a new book. “Letters of Note” sounds like an odd title, but this is a wonderful book. This collection of unusual letters from people you’ve heard of and some you hadn’t makes for delightful reading. From a heartrending letter written to his mother by a British pilot shot down in WWII to a strongly worded rebuff by a well-known performer, you will enjoy each and every one. When I received this gift, I was mesmerized from the first. This is Volume 2, so soon I will need to look for Volume 1.

Monday Night at the Movies at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse offers two of my favorite musical movies this month. Next Monday, Feb. 20, features “Singin’ in the Rain,” and Feb. 27 is “West Side Story.” These are at 7 pm, and the entry is only $5 cash at the door.

Celebrate the Oscars’ telecast with other film lovers on Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center. Enjoy light appetizers, desserts, and beverages beginning at 7 pm, get your photo taken with a real Oscar, and fill out your Oscar predictions ballot before the ceremony starts at 8:30 pm. Come for an hour, or stay all evening watching the big screen. Advance tickets are $35, $25 for members; $40 at the door.

You can get help from Martha’s Vineyard Partnership for Health if you are caring for a family member with arthritis, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, asthma, or depression. You need information and skills to be able to help them and yourself. Two six-week sessions of “My Life, My Health” will be held in March and April. The American Legion Hall will hold classes on Wednesdays, beginning March 1, from 10 am to 12:30, through April 5. Or you can go to Howes House in West Tisbury on Monday mornings from March 12 to April 17. You must preregister at 508-693-9358, ext. 114.

Ready to try your hand at art? Featherstone offers beginning drawing with Nancy Black on Monday mornings from 10 to noon. Plein air still life is offered Monday afternoons. Drawing figures for beginners or intermediates is on Saturdays. The ceramics seminar begins the 20th.

Did you notice that the youngsters on sleds in our town nearly wore away all the snow at the Tashmoo Overlook? My kids used to enjoy sliding over long gentle slopes on a local golf course. It doesn’t take much of a hill to make a good ride.

When I was very young, we kids lined up our sleds at the top of a pretty steep hill in a neighbor’s backyard that led down across the church parking lot. Fortunately for us, the church rarely plowed the lot except on Sundays.

Is it too soon to admit that I am sick of snow? I remember when just the thought of snow was a delight, but even the beauty of the snowy scenes now does little to change my mind. Enough already.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Mary Gillette. Wish the best tomorrow to Colin Kennedy. Happy birthday to Carrie Tankard and Rebecca Perkalis on Saturday. Sunday belongs to Peter Palches. Birthday greetings to Tom Robinson and Benjamin Davey go out on Monday.

Heard on Main Street: It’s never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you.
