Creative drama teacher Phyllis Vecchia worked with sixth and eighth grade students at the Tisbury School this past winter and spring. The sixth graders studied the life and times of the women of the Salem Witch Trials, along with Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Clinton. The eighth graders studied Katherine Johnson, the African American mathematician featured in the film “Hidden Figures,” as well as the Greensboro Sit-In, Mary Chipman Lawrence, a whaling wife from Falmouth, and Phillis Wheatley, the first African American poet.
According to a press release, students were able to learn more about “the role that women played in developing the world.” Vecchia will continue her creative drama work at the West Tisbury School with the third grade. The students will re-enact the lives of Abigail Adams and Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman doctor.
The creative drama program is paid for by the town of Tisbury, private funding, and donors, the release states. For more information, contact Phyllis Vecchia at pvcreativedrama@yahoo.com or call 508-696-8738.
