Grand Illumination Night is happening this year, but it will be modified due to the rise in COVID cases. — Gabrielle Mannino

Grand Illumination Night in Oak Bluffs, August 18, is being modified this year as cases spike on-Island and concerns surrounding large gatherings persist, according to a press release.

The Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association announced in the release Monday that the Campground cottages will again be illuminated with lanterns this year (after a hiatus last year due to COVID), but folks will have to go without some of the regular fanfare.

There will be no programming at the Tabernacle this year, which usually includes music by the Vineyard Haven Band, a Community Sing, and the ceremonial lighting of the first lantern.

This time around, all cottage owners who want to participate in the more than 150-year-old tradition can light their lanterns at 8 pm.

Not as many cottages will be decorated this year, but many are still expected to participate.

Visitors can stroll through the grounds and check out the lanterns, but it’s recommended that people wear a face covering, due to the expected crowd size.

There is no parking being offered in Sunset Park this year. Anyone planning to head to Oak Bluffs for the evening should plan accordingly.
