Pet parade

Christmas in Edgartown is bringing back the pet parade this year, as part of the annual Saturday parade down Main Street. Bring all pets to the Edgartown school at 10 am on December 11. Festive attire on pets, such as costumes and bows, is encouraged, and there will be ribbon at the school to use to decorate there. Pets and owners will walk from the school and down Main Street starting at 11 am. For more information, contact Lisa Vanderhoop at 508-645-3201.

Patricia Neal film series

Throughout the month of December is a Patricia Neal film series at the Vineyard Haven Library. On Tuesdays from Dec. 7 to Dec. 28 at 7 pm, see (in order) “Hud,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” “The Fountainhead,” and “The Subject Was Roses.”

Ms. Neal, a long time resident of Martha’s Vineyard, was a fixture at the annual Possible Dreams benefit auction. In 1963, Ms. Neal won an Academy Award for Best Actress in “Hud.” Ms. Neal died Sunday, Aug. 8 on the Island.

Slow Food

Slow Food Martha’s Vineyard is gearing up for Terra Madre Day: A Celebration of Local Food and Community, next Friday, Dec. 10. A fundraiser for the global initiative Thousand Gardens in Africa, there will be live music by Goodnight Louise, local food including oysters, and presentations from 6 to 9 pm at the Chilmark Community Center. In the spirit of Slow Food, guests are asked to bring a dish to share. Admission is a $10 suggested donation; $5 for members. Thousand Gardens in Africa is a Slow Food initiative, aiming to create 1,000 vegetable gardens in schools, villages, and on the outskirts of African cities. VFW holiday fair

The Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW is hosting a Holiday Fair and Country Store craft and flea market this Saturday, Dec. 4, from 10 am to 3 pm. At the VFW in Oak Bluffs, find gift baskets, a bake sale, holiday gifts, raffles, and more.

Two poets

On Sunday, Dec. 5, poets Patrick Phillips and Fan Ogilvie will read their poetry at the West Tisbury Library, at 4 pm. Mr. Phillips is currently working on a project/manuscript “We Plié,” and published his book “Ruin” in 1995. Ms. Ogilvie is the poet laureate of West Tisbury and most recently published “Poems from the Gray Bar Hotel.”
