So I finally managed to get off the Island this past weekend. What a chore that is in August. And not without the added stress of driving to Vineyard Haven only to discover that our boat was out of Oak Bluffs. Well, we made it, and all stress was forgotten at Fenway Park watching the Sox pull off a tenth-inning victory over the Yankees. But enough about Boston. Let's talk about our lovely little town.
Tonight (August 11) at the Farm Institute, the M.V. Film Society presents Barnyard Movie Night, starting at 8 pm. They will be showing the movie Chicken Run. Should be a fun event for the whole family.
Speaking of the Farm Institute, what a treasure that place is. My niece Caroline joined me for lunch one day last week, and ever the fashion plate, she had on a cute little skirt and top, complemented by rubber rain boots. I of course thought this was a style choice, until she enlightened me that she had been with the animals in the stalls all morning, so she had to wear her boots. Anyone who can separate kids from their iPods and DSs to play in the mud these days deserves applause.
Booklets are now available at the Library for the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Society's 150th Annual Livestock Show and Fair from Thursday through Sunday, August 18-21, in West Tisbury. This year's fair booklets, complete with entry forms for everything from the dog show to the skillet throwing contest, will be available until the stack runs out.
The Martha's Vineyard Garden Club will hold its election of officers at the annual meeting on Tuesday, August 16, at 1 pm at the Old Mill in West Tisbury. Tim Simmons will present a program called "Global Warming: Plants and Habitats." A hospitality hour including refreshments will follow the program. Anyone interested in horticulture, home gardening, flower arranging, and preserving the best qualities of the Island environment is welcome. For further information, call the Garden Club Hotline, 508-693-5334. Inquiries regarding membership are welcome.
Setti Warren, Mayor of Newton and candidate in the Democratic primary for the Senate seat presently held by Scott Brown, will speak at a special meeting of the MV Democratic Council at the Howes House on Saturday, August 13, at 9:30 am. The public is cordially invited for spicy conversation, good information, and no fundraising. For more information, call 508-693-1627.
In honor of the Martha's Vineyard Museum's ongoing exhibit, "Your Town, Our Island," which is designed to celebrate the different characters and voices of the Island's separate towns, the Museum is offering free admission and reduced membership rates to all Edgartown residents from August 15 to 19. So bring your family, and learn about your town. Contact the Museum at 508-627-4441 for further info.
The Vineyard Music Scene will host a Showcase Dance Party at Nectar's on Saturday, August 27, to benefit the skate park. A bunch of bands are going to play. Should be a good time. Visit their Facebook page, facebook.com/VineyardMusicScene for further info.
A belated Happy Birthday goes out to Paul Condlin, who celebrated his day August 7. Hope it was a good one. To TR Fullin, who celebrates August 13, I hope the only numbers you have to crunch are those in your golf score.
I'll be bouncing back and forth to Boston over the next few weeks (ah, wedding season!), so help a buddy out and keep me apprised of your goings-on while I'm slightly out of touch.
