Leighton Lamar Burriss of Oak Bluffs died August 13, 2011.
He was born November 3, 1930, in Washington, D.C. Leighton was the son of William F. Burriss and Henrietta L. Lutes. He is survived by three children: Jacqueline B. Meadows (Steve) of South Boston, Va., William James Burriss of Oak Bluffs, and Joanne McFarland of Randallstown, Md.; four grandchildren, Karen Epperly, Sean Epperly (Magali), Kelly Clark (Ricky) and Danielle Solomon; five great-granddaughters, Kendall, Haley, Julia, Leighton and Leá, and a great, great grandson, Tristan.
Leighton was a veteran of the U. S. Navy Seabees and a lifelong member of the VFW. He was a retired paint contractor, an accomplished artist, and an avid reader and story-teller. He enjoyed all types of music and in earlier years he played the guitar, banjo, and harmonica, and raised and hunted foxhounds.
Prior to moving to Martha’s Vineyard, Leighton lived in Ferrum, Va.
