Edgartown library director Felicia Cheney submitted her resignation to the library board of directors at their regular meeting Monday evening. Ms. Cheney directed the library for the past six years.
The trustees will discuss the search for a new director, and the time frame for Ms. Cheney's departure, at their next meeting.
The board of trustees and the private, nonprofit Edgartown library foundation have been at the center of political controversy as the town launched a project to renovate and expand the historic Carnegie library building on North Water Street. That project was scrapped when fundraising fell short of its goals. The town is now moving forward with a plan to build a new library on the site of the old Edgartown School.
In town elections last spring, three new members were elected to the library board of directors, and another new member has since been appointed to fill a seat vacated by resignation.
