Call for artists
Preparations have begun for this year's annual Friends of Family Planning Art Show benefit, scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, May 25-27. New artists are invited to participate, and returning artists are welcomed back. All kinds of art is accepted: paintings, furniture, pottery, three-dimensional art, jewelry, and weaving. New at TFI
The FARM Institute in Edgartown announces two new ways to buy local meat. First is Cut of the Month: Each month TFI will feature a different "cut" of meat for 10 percent off, along with free recipes on the website (farminstitute.org). This month it's roaster chicken.
Second is the Buying Club. Order from the list of frozen individual cuts of beef, lamb, pork, poultry, eggs, and yarn on a monthly basis and pick up orders a designated pick-up sites on the Vineyard. For those who prefer a CSA-style club, 10- and 20-pound "sampler packs" are also available. Visit the website or email julie@farminstitute.org to sign up.
Deals at Capawock
Buzzy Hall of the Capawock Theatre announces two discounts at the movies this weekend. Children and students will be admitted to this week's opera, "Aida," for $6, instead of the normal $11 rate, because Mr. Hall believes it is a perfect opportunity to introduce children to the world of opera.
Second, Martha's Vineyard Film Festival members can see "A Separation" for $5 this weekend. See the movie schedule on C2 for show times.
Wine and cheese at the P-A
This Saturday, March 24, the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs is hosting another wine, beer, and cheese tasting, from 6 to 9 pm. The casual, fun events have sold out in the past. Tickets ($30) are available now by calling 508-693-9875.
Enjoy eight wines from Portugal, paired with cheeses from Murray's of New York, and 13 beers accompanied by various appetizers. Ticket-holders will be entered into a raffle for a basket of goodies, and also have a chance to win an overnight getaway to Portland, Maine, compliments of Shipyard Brewery.
Celebrity sightings
Visit the Federated Church Parish House this Saturday night and maybe George Clooney will wait on you at the annual "Celebrity Waiters" pasta dinner. A benefit for the Haiti Peace Quilt program, traditionally Vineyarders dress up and act as celebrities while serving guests dinner. "Many surprises are in order, come and enjoy," writes Lorraine St. Pierre in a press release. Dinner is from 6 to 8:30 pm, and tickets are $8; $5 for children; $25 for families.
Library art
See the artwork of Wilfrid "Willie" Huntington on display at the West Tisbury Library, through the end of March.
The Island artist started his career in the 1920s, and for six decades created drawings, lithographs, illustrations, dry points, etchings, oils, and watercolors. The exhibition includes his final dry point, "Chickadees and Holly." Most of the pieces are on loan from private collections and his family.
