With fare hikes on the horizon, Islanders can expect to pay more to ride the Island Home.

With the Oak Bluffs terminal open, Steamship Authority (SSA) general manager Wayne Lamson says that the boatline is ready for the summer. “We are open for business and expecting a busy summer the way things have started out for the year.”

Mr. Lamson reports that the SSA parked 687 more cars in their off-Island lots last weekend than they did over the same weekend in 2011. A total of 2,473 cars were parked this year, a 38-percent increase over last year’s total, 1,787.

Vehicle reservations for the 2012 summer season are up 6.4 percent, according to Mr. Lamson. As of May 1, the SSA had processed 124,101 truck and automobile reservations for the 2012 summer schedule, a period from May 21 to October 14. That’s an increase of 7,409 reservations over the comparable period last year.

The SSA begins taking summer reservations in January. “We hope that the weather cooperates and that everyone has a good season.”

Mr. Lamson said that they will keep adding more service when they see that reservations are being booked. “We have added extra service for this weekend into Monday and Tuesday. We see a lot of people returning. There will be a big rush.” He said that all the reservations are sold out. “We try to anticipate these things when we can and schedule extra service when we can,” he said.
