A new "Welcome to Edgartown" greets visitors.
On a patch of grass at the Triangle in Edgartown, a new sign with gold lettering greets visitors and Island residents with the message: "Welcome to Edgartown. Est. 1671." It is highlighted by decorative bunches of grapes.
Woodcarver and sign maker Joe Uranker of Oak Bluffs created the sign at a cost of $4,500, paid with money from the beautification committee of Edgartown.
The sign is surrounded by new plants and flowers. The sign and plantings provide a welcome view for vehicles inching through the often busy intersection of Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road and Beach Road.
"It identifies the beginning of town," beautification committee chairman Anne Vose said. "I think it creates a beautiful island to welcome our visitors to Edgartown."
Ms. Vose said she is happy the three-year project was completed in time for the 2012 summer season.
