One way Martha's Vineyard welcomes summer is with the annual Oak Bluffs Association Harbor Festival and Summer Solstice celebration happening this Saturday, June 16.
From 10 am to 5 pm, new and returning vendors, artisans, and nonprofits will line the Oak Bluffs harbor, offering passersby a variety of local food, merchandise, and activities. Climb the rock wall, find a piece of sea glass jewelry, and have some pizza and lemonade to immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere and prepare for the Island's liveliest season.
At Washington Park, located on New York Avenue between the Ocean View Restaurant and Our Market, the Midsummer Faerie Festival will also run from 10 am to 5 pm. The festival, sponsored by Fae Magazine, will include live folk, lyric, and traditional Celtic music, puppet theatre, fairy tales, and magic workshops throughout the day.
At 5 pm, watch the procession of local businesses, clubs, antique cars, musicians, faeries, and sports teams from the harbor to Circuit Avenue in the Solstice Parade. This year any antique car drivers, clubs, teams, or individuals can join the parade. Circuit Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic from 5 to 11 pm so people can stroll the street to shop or dine outside at a number of restaurants that have set up tables outside, one of only two nights of the year that this is allowed (the other being Tivoli Day in September).
The day will end with fireworks over Ocean Park at 9:15 pm. As the crowd relaxes on the lawn with picnic blankets and beach chairs, sparks fly overhead signaling that summer has begun.
