Martha’s Vineyard golfers qualify for state tournament

The Vineyard golfers became the second high school team this fall to clinch an MIAA state tournament bid following a 248-257 win over Falmouth on October 11 at Vineyard Golf Club. Kat deBettencourt shot a 38 and her brother Mike carded a 39.

The win over the formidable Clippers was the Vineyarders 10th of the season, which put coach Doug DeBettencourt’s team over the top.

The team followed up with a 252-264 home loss to 14-2 Dartmouth and a 38-34 match play defeat Monday at Scituate. M.V. wrapped up the regular season Wednesday afternoon at Vineyard Golf Club against Cape Tech of Harwich.

The Vineyarders (10-9) will start state tournament play on Tuesday in the Division 2 South Sectionals at Easton Country Club. Mike deBettencourt, Kat deBettencourt, Justin Smith, Matt Marchand, Brendan Maseda, and Andrew Hakala made the Vineyard playoff roster.

The task for the Vineyarders is daunting. They must finish play on Tuesday as one of the top two teams out of 14 to advance to the next round.

Prior to state tournament play, Mike deBettencourt, Kat deBettencourt, and Justin Smith, will compete individually in the Cape and Islands Schoolboys Tournament on Friday at the Bass River Golf Club in Yarmouth.
