A cappella jazz at Katharine Cornell
A jazz a cappella group from Kenyon College is performing on Martha's Vineyard as part of its annual winter tour. Take Five, created in 2002 at the Ohio college, performs old-time favorites as well as contemporary tunes. The concert is on Sunday, Jan. 6, at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven, starts at 7:30 pm, and costs $15; $10 for seniors and students. Sabbath to Stop Gun Violence
The Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center and First Congregational Church of West Tisbury are co-sponsoring a Sabbath about gun violence this coming Friday, Jan. 4.
The Sabbath was announced by Mayors Against Illegal Guns and this will be one of many congregations participating across the country. At the service, remember those who have been murdered by guns in Newtown and other mass killings, learn and discuss religious texts related to gun violence, and discuss what faith communities can do to help heal and advocate for gun laws. Neighborhood Convention
On Tuesday, Jan. 8, the Neighborhood Convention will meet at the Martha's Vineyard Film Center in the Tisbury Market Place in Vineyard Haven.
Richard Paradise will present the program, Going to the Movies, at 10:45 am. Jerry Fritz will conduct the worship service. In a departure from the usual bag lunch plan, please make plans to have lunch elsewhere, as we will not be bringing food into the center. For more information, call Mary-Jean Miner at 508-696-8589.
Winter sky
Sip on hot chocolate and learn about the stars in the winter sky next Thursday, Jan. 10, at Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury. Join amateur astronomer Barbara Caseau to learn to identify stars and other celestial objects. Bring binoculars or telescopes if available, and a flashlight. Drumming class to start

Soup's on at Grace Church
Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven welcomes all to its yearly Community Soup Suppers beginning this Friday, Jan. 4, from 5 to 6:30 pm.
The free and hearty winter suppers will feature a variety of homemade soups along with salad, bread, and desserts. Come for a tasty, nutritious meal, a warm welcome on a chilly evening, and good company and conversation. Suppers will be served every Friday through March.
