Born in England, Bob Gothard began his career as a commercial photographer in 1966 as a fashion and portrait photographer for Vogue and Harper's as well as couture designers such as Armani, Dior, Jaeger, and Hugo Boss.
His work is currently on display at Alchemy, a French restaurant in Edgartown. The show features striking photographs of shells, shown in dramatic clarity and detail.
In the late 1970s he started his own fashion magazines: Preview, View, and Camouflage. He came to Martha's Vineyard to do a spread of American fashion icons, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Perry Ellis, and Alexander Julian, and wound up moving here. Then he went on to photograph album covers, celebrity portraits, and currently, Island people and weddings.

The young artists, children from 7 to 12 years old, who have been taking advantage of the classes at Martha's Vineyard Art Association's (MVAA) Studio School, have had opportunities to explore a full range of creative activities in the arts, and are ready to reveal their accomplishments. The MVAA Annual Children's Art Show, will be held this Saturday, August 14, from 1-3 pm at Old Sculpin Gallery on Dock Street, Edgartown.
Classes, with no more than 15 students to a class, are held weekday mornings in the second floor studio of Old Sculpin Gallery. Various artists lend their talents and teach everything from portraits to landscapes, map making, patchwork quilts, mono printing, and accordion bookmaking. Students investigate art from around the world, carve plaster in a study of scrimshaw, and use all manner of materials.
The show on Saturday, complete with refreshments and all the trimmings, promises to be an impressive display of talent and creativity. 508-627-4881.
