Tisbury Police, assisted by Massachusetts State Police, arrested Brandao Geraldo Alves Caldeira, 38, for an alleged knife attack against a female victim at a Cook Road home.

Tisbury Police Chief Chris Habekost said in an initial statement that the suspect was charged with “multiple violent felonies including attempted murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.”

At the Edgartown District Courthouse on Monday, Caldeira was arraigned for attempted murder, assault and battery on a household member, threatening to commit crime, intimidation of a witness, juror, police, or court official, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and malicious destruction of property valued over $1,200.

Caldeira entered the Edgartown courthouse escorted by a court officer in chains on Monday afternoon, wearing shorts and a white shirt that seemingly had dried blood stains around the collar, shoulders, and chest area.

At the courthouse, Caldeira pleaded not guilty on all charges. Judge Benjamin Barnes ordered Caldeira to remain in custody at the Dukes County House of Corrections in Edgartown with no bail and to stay away from and have no contact with the alleged victim.

According to Tisbury police, the call of an attack came in around 10:45 pm on Sunday. Habekost said the knife allegedly used to attack the victim was recovered at the scene.

“The female victim was taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital with serious injuries and was in stable condition as of this morning,” Habekost said in the statement. “This is all the information that I can provide to the public at this time.”

District court documents show Caldeira was born in Brazil, and he required a Portuguese translator at his arraignment on Monday. His immigration status is unclear at this time, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement has not immediately responded to requests for comment.
