Plymouth shuts out Vineyard soccer girls
The Martha’s Vineyard varsity girls soccer team took on Plymouth North at the Eagles’ aerie, Friday. The Vineyarders were shut out while Plymouth scored five times. Jessica Campbell was praised for her work on defense and midfielder Jessie Chandler for her efforts on attack. The Island girls record slipped to 1-14-5 on the season.
Slick Wickets for Vineyard croquet players
Jim Turner of West Tisbury, and his croquet partner David Ekstrom, defeated Ben Rothman and Micah Beck twice in the 2010 Combined Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament and won the Doubles Championship Trophy. It was no mean feat as Rothman is the current top player in the U.S. The tournament was held in Greenwich, Conn. At singles, Jim lost to Chris Patmore, overall tournament champion, and the only player ever to win the British and Australian Opens in the same year, 13-12 in last ball. Jim finished third behind Patmore and Rothman.
The fastest speed-sailor in the world
Thirty-nine-year-old Rob Douglas of Vineyard Haven set a new world record for speed sailing at Luderitz, Namibia, on October 28, averaging 55.65 knots over the 500-meter course. Regrettably, in a subsequent attempt to beat his own world record, Rob broke his wrist, forcing him to retire from the competition.
Learn to skate
The second session of the MV Figure Skating Club’s learn-to-skate program begins Tuesday, November 9 and runs for six weeks.
Classes for children as young as 3 and older are held Tuesdays from 5:00 to 5:30 pm. Registration fee is $135. Skates and helmet rentals are available for an additional cost. Please call director Beth Blankenship-O’Connor, 774-521-9870, to sign up.
Masters on the edge
The Vineyard FC Masters of the Over the Hill League played the Foxboro Warthogs with eleven players and went down to defeat, 6-1. The only VFC goal was scored by Rudolfo “Rudy” Fernandez in the first half.
The VFC has dropped from first place in the New England Over the Hill Soccer League’s Masters Division to stand in danger of being relegated to Division 6.
The VFC plays its final game of the fall season this Sunday at West Roxbury. Kickoff is at 8:30 am. A win on Sunday could put them in fourth place and keep them in Division 5 for the spring season.
