Island Boy Scouts score big in Cape shoot out

Three scouts from Vineyard Boy Scout Troop 93 of Oak Bluffs and one Weblos Scout from Pack 93 scored high marks at a “turkey shoot” target competition held on Nov. 13 at Camp Greenough in Yarmouthport, attended by more than 250 scouts from the Cape and islands.

Weblos Scout Charlie Fenske of Edgartown placed in the top ten in the BB gun competition and placed fourth in archery and won a turkey for his skill.

Boy Scouts competed by age group in five separate competitive shooting events: BB gun, archery, rifle, black powder, and shotgun. In the 11 to 14 age group, Liam Waite of Oak Bluffs placed in the archery top ten and won a turkey when he placed fourth in rifle.

In the 14 and over age group, DJ Nelson of Edgartown won three turkeys. He placed fourth in archery, fourth in black powder and took first place in the shotgun competition, the only contest that included moving targets.

Senator Scott Brown, a former Boy Scout, addressed the scouts. He spoke about the value of the scouting experience and how scouting shaped his life.

The Oak Bluffs Firemen’s Civic Association is the sponsor of the scout troops.
