Is it going on forever this winter, this cycle of snow, showers, then freezing up and ice?

I need ice skates (and better balance) to navigate from the back porch to the car. Even Molly, my lab, who loves to run in the snow chasing tennis balls, carefully picks her way across the lawn. Now snow turning to rain is predicted for Tuesday of this week. So at least it will be a bit warmer and hopefully will not immediately drop to freezing again.

Joe and Nicole deBettencourt welcomed a new baby daughter, Alaina Rae, on Friday last. Alaina was welcomed by her two older sisters, Angela and Leah, and brother, Joe.

Due to a forecasted storm in the NYC area, The Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network was forced to re-schedule their program of Goal Setting, GPS Your Life and Career. It will now be held on Tuesday, January 25, with check-in at 11:30 am for the program that begins at noon. A light lunch will be served. The program is sponsored by the Mansion House and tours of the Fitness Center and Spa will be available starting at 11 am.

Oak Bluffs residents Terry Pothier and Kathy Spiro were featured in the Not Summer issue of Martha’s Vineyard Magazine. Along with four other Island friends, these Oak Bluffs women walked the 63-mile perimeter of Martha’s Vineyard. It is a most interesting story about their 40-hour, six-day expedition.

On Saturday, January 22, from 11 am to 1 pm, come join others at the Oak Bluffs Library in a Snowflake Craft workshop. Beat the winter blues by making your very own snowflakes. Rubbing plates, stamps, beading crafts, and more. This is for all ages.

The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., has a large exhibition of Lois Mailou Jones’s artwork. Her 75-year career included time on Martha’s Vineyard, and there are several Island paintings and references. You can Google it to see a description of LMJones exhibition.

Speaking of art, if you have occasion to visit the M.V. Hospital, you will notice that there are a few paintings hung in some of the waiting rooms and lobbies. These have all been donated to the hospital and certainly enhance the areas where they are found.

Many Vineyard youth are looking forward to the New Year. Some were busy during this holiday season working towards their dreams. Oak Bluffs resident Adrian Aristide held a College Scholarship Workshop at the Oak Bluffs Library. She just graduated from Salem State University as a psychology major. Last summer, Adrian served as first Project Coordinator for the Youth Summit at the Martha’s Vineyard Youth Leadership andStone Soup Leadership Institute.
