Cancer Support Tennis Tourney a smashing success

Farm Neck and Vineyard Youth Tennis hosted the Martha’s Vineyard Open, held July 29-31, to benefit the MV Cancer Support Group.

Eighty-six players participated in the event, which raised more than $6,000 for the charity.

The winning pairs were:

Pro Doubles: Tye Meyers and Tyler Owens defeated Matt Browne and Max Eppley, 6-2, 6-4.

At Men’s A Jim Sault and Scott Nicol defeated Mark Jenkins and Donald Nitchie, 6-1, 6-3.

At Men’s B Ken Armstead and Larry Poland defeated Rob Peirce and Cecil Sells, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7.

At Women’s A Sue Kimball and Liz Roberts defeated Nina Bramhall and Lisa Grain, 6-3, 7-5.

At Women’s C Mollee Lewis and Julie Lively defeated Barbara Leonard and Lili Cooperrider, 6-4, 6-2.

At Mixed B Cynthia Margolis and Tyson Tyler defeated Hope Callen and Tony Omer, 6-1, 6-4.

At Mixed C Lili Cooperrider and Skip Dostal defeated Tjark Aldeborgh and Anne Williamson, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.

USTA tourney at VYT

Vineyard Youth Tennis will host a USTA tournament August 12-14 for boys and girls 12 and under and boys and girls 14 and under. Youngsters may register at www.usta.com/tennis. The tournament ID is 450414711.

Island Women’s team vies for District title

The M.V. 4.5 Woman’s USTA team that won the Cape & Islands league last month, will be competing this weekend in the Eastern Mass. District Championships held in Bass River. The team is made up of seven players from M.V. and five players from Rhode Island and southeastern Mass. Vineyard players are: Nina Bramhall (captain), Judy Bramhall, Liz Roberts, Sue Kimball. Debbie Cooper, Gretchen Massey, and Linda Leahy. They will be competing against four other teams from eastern Mass. The winning team will go on to New England Sectionals in South Hadley later this month. The M.V. team was undefeated in local league play.
