Friday, at North Dartmouth, the Vineyarders notched their second Eastern Athletic Conference victory, with an 18-14 win over the Bishop Stang Spartans.
With MV trailing 14-12, Del Araujo hooked up with Brandon Watkins on a 23-yard pass play with 1:14 remaining in regulation for the winning score. At the final whistle, the ball was in Vineyard hands following an interception by Doug Andrade.
The Spartans posted the first points early in the first quarter to lead, 6-0. MV responded and evened the count on a run by Delmont Araujo. The extra point kick was blocked.
With seconds remaining in the first half, the Spartans scored their second TD on a 10-yard pass. Another pass upped the ante two points to make the score 14-6 at the break.
No points were posted in the third quarter. But runs by speedsters Brandon Watkins and Joe Turney earned six more points for the visitors: 14-12.
With time running out, the game was replete with dropped passes and personal fouls. Even so, neither team could be faulted for lack of effort in a closely contested game.
The Vineyarders improved to 3-6 overall and finished the EAC schedule with a 2-2 record, third behind Bishop Feehan and Somerset Berkley.
