Oak Bluffs firefighters put out a quick-moving brush fire at about 8:45 pm, Saturday. Dry conditions in the heavily wooded area off Linden Avenue in the Lagoon Heights area made ideal conditions for the fire to spread.
Oak Bluffs Fire Chief John Rose said firefighters arrived quickly and extinguished the blaze with foam before it could grow. He said the area of the fire was not large, but it was in a remote location.
“We contained it really fast,” Chief Rose said.
The cause is not known. Nearby residents reported hearing what sounded like an explosion about 30 minutes before the fire was reported, but there are no power lines or transformers in the general area, Mr. Rose said. An inspection the following day shed no light on the origin of the blaze, he said.
Chief Rose praised the quick work by his volunteer department. “We have a fast response time,” he said.
