The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School track teams competed last weekend at the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association (MSTCA) freshman/sophomore meet in Abington and at the 5th annual Sunset meet at Greater New Bedford High School, scoring impressive results at both.
In Abington, Olivia Smith won three events to earn most valuable honors. She placed first in the high jump (4’ 11”), the 400-meter low hurdles (69.15) and 100-meter high hurdles (17.11).
A half dozen more Vineyarders had big days in the MSTCA event, which attracts over 1,500 athletes from Divisions 3 and 4, many of them tasting state level competition for the first time.
Juniper Ezanno leaped to third in the long jump (15’ 7”) and sixth in the triple jump (30’ 8”); Chase Silvia placed fifth in the high jump (5’ 7”) and the 400-meter hurdles (67.88); Aivaras Gedvilas was eighth (11:04) and Daniel Gaines 10th (11:10) in the two-mile run; Madison Moreis placed 10th in the triple jump (29’ 9.5”); and Whitney Schroeder took 10th in the javelin (82’ 2”).
At the Sunset meet, Jeremy Alley-Tarter broke the meet record in the 800 meters, coming to the finish line in 1:56.74. Other Vineyarders placing in the top 10 included: Joe Turney, javelin (5th, 150’); Sabrina Reppert, javelin (6th, 91’ 7”) and 400 meters (7th, 67.07); Tony Breth, triple jump (6th, 38’ 4.75”); George Sykes, two miles (6th, 10:53); Kevin Montambault, 110-meter hurdles (8th, 17:35).
