Charity tennis tournament benefits the MV Fish Farm for Haiti Project

The Fish Farm for Haiti charity tennis tournament held this past weekend at Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs attracted 70 players and raised over $3,700 for the Island-based charity.

“With the addition of two new tennis courts at Farm Neck, scheduling should be a breeze,” tournament organizer Mike Johns said prior to the event.

It was nothing of the sort, tournament director Mas Kimball said in an email to The Times. With participation up from 41 players last year, it was non-stop action on the courts. Luckily, the weather was perfect and all matches went off like clockwork, he said.

Teenagers, once again, dominated every event they entered with Kelly Klaren winning both the Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles in the “A” Division. In the Women’s Doubles, which was played in a round robin format, she and partner, Kat Roberts, defeated veterans Sue Kimball and Lisa Grain as well as Victoria Scott and Lizzie Williamson. In the Mixed Doubles, Kelly partnered with Zak Danz to again take down Sue Kimball and partner Arthur Stafford in a long, hard-fought three-set match, 6-1,4-6, 6-4.

In the Men’s “A” Division, Tim Penicaud, who’s mom heads up the Fish Farm for Haiti Project, and partner Paul Hammond got off to a shaky start against Paul Adler, a perennial finalist and supporter of all the charity tournaments over the years, and partner Fain Hackney. After losing the first set, 6-2, they found their rhythm and took the next two sets, 6-3, 6-1.

In a new twist to round robin play, the Women’s “B” Doubles was played as a “mixed partner” with each player playing with a different partner each round. It made for some interesting partnership and exciting tennis. Also, new this year, was a “Shootout” Doubles on Sunday for all those you had been eliminated from the tournament. Again, mixing partners with fun results was the order of the day. Beth Sawyer and Roland Marquez were the winners.
