On Sunday, four Island kids competed in and finished the New England Kids Triathlon held at MIT in Cambridge. Emma Williamson (nine years old), Jackson Pachico (12), Aliye Reinhardt (11), and Ava BenDavid (11) were among almost 1,000 kids who participated in the event.
The distances in the junior division (6 to 10 years old) were 100-meter swim; 3-mile bike ride; ½-mile run; senior division (11 to 15): 200-meter swim; 6-mile bike; 1-mile run.
In preparation, the four Islanders participated in a two-week triathlon clinic, Tri4Ever, run by Paul and Shelly Bloom, summer residents who work with the Triangle Multisport triathlon coaching group. Paul is also an assistant coach of the Duke University Triathlon Club, and he and Shelly are both on the faculty at Duke. For information about next summer’s program, contact paulnbloom@gmail.com.
