Oak Bluffs police said Franklin S. Ayala, 26, of Los Angeles was drunk and speeding when he struck a concrete pillar and utility pole off Lake Street near Sunset Lake at 1:45 am, Sunday.

According to witnesses, Mr. Ayala was traveling more than 70 miles per hour outbound on Lake Ave towards Tisbury when he lost control of his rented 2014 Dodge Durango at the corner near Dukes County Ave., skidded across Lake Ave., and struck a concrete fence pillar and a utility pole, which prevented the vehicle from landing in the pond. Mr. Ayala then parked the vehicle in the Our Market parking lot, police said.

Mr. Ayala was placed under arrest at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on charges of operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, and speeding. He was released on personal recognizance by the bail commissioner from the hospital and transported to a Boston area hospital for his injuries, police said.
