The National Weather Service said that Hurricane Cristobal will bring dangerous surf and rip currents to south facing ocean beaches of Rhode Island and Massachusetts through at least Thursday night as it passes well off the coast of New England.

There is a high risk of dangerous surf and rip currents. Beach goers are advised to be extremely cautious.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Island emergency responders and Coast Guard units responded to a report of five people caught in the current off Long Point beach in West Tisbury. As of press time Wednesday, all were reported safe and on land.
