Against a dramatic natural backdrop that included the Atlantic Ocean and the multi-hued Gay Head cliffs set against a clear blue sky, 146 runners took of from the starting line at 10 am in the second annual Gay Head 10K race Sunday.
James Smadbeck, 27, of Edgartown, finished first with a time of 40:18.00, followed closely behind by Vineyard Haven residents Reaan Steenkamp and Paul Vertefeuille, who finished second and third, respectively.
Mr. Steenkamp’s strong showing followed his recent victory in the Martha’s Vineyard Haven Public Library 5K and third place performance in the Edgartown Library 5K.
The 6.2 mile course began and ended at the lighthouse, winding down State Road and looping back along Moshup Trail.
The race was a fundraiser in support of the effort to move the Gay Head Lighthouse away from the eroding cliffs. Once the imminent relocation is complete, the 10K will remain an annual event to raise money for maintenance costs.
Lianne Swanson of Somerville was the first woman to finish the course. She finished fifth overall with a time of 42:08.00. Otto Osmers, 14, of West Tisbury, finished first among young people with a time of 45:18.00, good for 16th overall.
