Chilmark seasonal resident Andrew L. Warshaw, surgeon-in-chief emeritus at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the W. Gerald Austen Distinguished Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Boston, was installed as the new President of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) October 26, during the 100th Convocation ceremony of the College. The Convocation preceded the opening of the annual ACS Clinical Congress in San Francisco, one of the largest international meetings of surgeons in the world.
“Achieving our personal best — back to the future of the American College of Surgeons” was the theme of Dr. Warshaw’s Presidential Address, delivered during the Convocation ceremony on Sunday, October 26.
Dr. Warshaw’s research activities have led to immense contributions to the field of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. He is the Director of the Andrew L. Warshaw Institute for Pancreatic Cancer Research at MGH and a former member of the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital board.
He is an author of more than 650 medical and scientific publications and an editor of 13 books. Dr. Warshaw and his wife, Brenda, have six children and 13 grandchildren.
