Pedestrian struck by car on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road Monday night

Neil “Apple” Welch of Vineyard Haven was struck by a car on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road at 5 pm Monday night. Mr. Welch, 58, was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital by ambulance in serious condition.

His sister, Diane Welch of Edgartown, told The Times Tuesday afternoon that her brother is in intensive care and awaiting surgery. “He’s holding his own,” she said. “It’s wait and see how he is doing.” Ms. Welch said people’s best wishes are appreciated.

Monday night conditions were cloudy and dark. Witnesses stated that Mr. Welch ran across the street in the vicinity of the Skiff Avenue intersection, Tisbury Police Chief Dan Hanavan told The Times in a phone call yesterday.

“I think he crossed at an area where the road was not lit, and not at a crosswalk,” Chief Hanavan said. No charges have been filed against the driver.

Chief Hanavan said the accident is still under investigation. Mr. Hanavan said he would not provide the driver’s name or other details until the responding Tisbury police officer’s report is complete and has been reviewed, which was not expected to be until Wednesday.
