On March 7, Island Scoutmaster Jamie Craig was awarded an “Oscar” by the Cape and Islands District of the Boy Scouts of America. Generally, six awards are given out for all of the Cape and Islands, a district which includes more than 600 volunteers.
Mr. Craig is the scoutmaster for Troop 91 on the Vineyard, and was commended for his assistance with with the organization of the council’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) event at Cape Cod Community College in March 2014. STEM events represent a cohesive national strategy to increase scientific literacy among our young people, using an interdisciplinary and applied approach coupled with hands-on, problem-based learning. At the event, Mr. Craig, a former Navy aviator, gave a multimedia presentation on fundamental orbital mechanics to a group of over 100 Scouts seeking the Space Exploration Merit Badge. When not leading Troop 91, Mr. Craig is a police officer for the town of Edgartown.
