To the Editor:

There has recently been a lot of discussion concerning the proposed development of 14 Pine Street in Vineyard Haven. In the almost 20 years my wife and I have lived here, I have watched the Island fill up. House construction is now a year-round industry, and the remaining open spaces are rapidly disappearing. With their loss, we lose an important part of ourselves. Without trees and animals and the wild spaces that sustain them, our world becomes the color of cement. We have a rare opportunity to create an open space within our town — a place to walk, to relax, to think. We’d be foolish not to take it.
