It was a busy weekend for Martha’s Vineyard youth soccer players. The Vineyarders played six games and came away with three victories and one tie. Here is a roundup:

U13 Boys: MV 2 – Barnstable 1

The U13 boys traveled to Barnstable for their opening match. In the 12th minute, Barnstable moved the ball out of the left corner, and and beat the goalie to take a 1-0 lead. Redemption came in the 32nd minute when Martha’s Vineyard’s Emanuel Silva rifled a shot into the top corner, off a pass from Josh Sampaio, to even the score at 1-1. The Vineyarders doubled their lead late in the second half when Emanuel Silva again scored, giving the Vineyard a lead they would not relinquish.

U12 Boys: MV 1 – Mashpee 0

The U12 boys soccer team faced Mashpee Saturday afternoon in an evenly matched game that stayed scoreless until the last few seconds. The Vineyard’s Kaio Pereira poked the ball past the Mashpee goalie, catapulting the Vineyard to a 1-0 victory. Goalkeeping performances by Nico DePaula and Ruairi Mullin helped the team enjoy its first shutout win of the season.

U12 Girls: Nantucket 5 – MV 2; MV 3 – Nantucket 3

The U12 Girls traveled to Nantucket for an overnight two-game set. In the first game, a South Coast Soccer League match, the Whalers got the best of the Vineyard 5-2. Martha’s Vineyard slipped to an early deficit, despite a number of great saves by Becket Wadleigh. In the second half, the Vineyard’s Leah Hairston scored after wiggling through midfield pressure, blasting a shot past the Nantucket keeper. Kate Howell rounded out the Vineyard scoring after sneaking a ball just inside the post for a goal late in the second half.

In game two, a Sunday friendly, Kate Howell continued her scoring ways after slipping a corner kick between the keeper and the near post. Later in the half, Gaby Reis scored her first goal for the Vineyard after recently joining. Ruby Reimann was active in net, coming up big a number of times. Sarah Lytle and Kaya Seimann displayed tremendous speed and effort from the wings. Nantucket were up by a goal until Kate Howell equalized with a goal in the last five minutes.

U16 Boys: MV 1 – Wareham 0

MV United U16 boys are off to a good start after traveling to Wareham and leaving with a victory over the weekend. Owen Hess scored the game’s only goal with less than a minute to play, after a brilliant assist from Devon Metters.

U15 Girls: Sandwich 6 – MV 1

The U15 girls fell to Sandwich 6-1. Ava Vigneault scored the Vineyard’s only goal after an Evelyn Medeiros shot rebounded into the path of Vigneault, who slotted it into the back of the net.
