To the Editor:
Late this afternoon I was told that Harbormaster Jay Wilbur had been removing small boats from Owen Park Beach and emptying the kayak rack.
When I arrived I found a huge, new Town of Tisbury truck parked by the beach waiting for a fill-up. There was also a smaller trailer full of kayaks, and stacks of small boats waiting to be removed from the beach. The beach was torn up with tire tracks from earlier morning removals.
Who and what gives this man the right to remove personal property? My kayaks were not only tied with rope but each had an expensive heavy-duty lock on them. They were both attached to the rack. The newly posted sign was obviously new and not beaten up from a winter of snow and storms.
So why post something after the fact? Where did our property go? Who is going to be responsible for stealing them all — the harbormaster or the selectmen? I think he should be arrested.
I’m filing a police report, and will do everything I can to stop this man. If you had anything on the beach at Owen Park, it’s now gone. We need to band together and get things changed in the harbor. Harbormaster harassment doesn’t make for a happy environment in our harbor. Talk to people; everyone has one of those stories.
