Martha’s Vineyard has three teams competing in the Gateway Babe Ruth League in Wareham. There are two junior varsity teams, Vineyard Black and Vineyard Gray, for ages 13 and 14, and one varsity team, Vineyard Purple, for ages 14 and 15. The junior varsity division hosts 18 teams from around and near the Cape, while the varsity division contains only eight teams.

Two weeks into the spring season, Vineyard Purple holds a 3-1 record after winning both ends of a doubleheader against the Gateway Tigers this past Sunday by the scores of 6-3 and 15-5.

In junior varsity action, also on Sunday, Vineyard Black beat the Fairhaven Tigers 16-8. Cousins Owen Porterfield and Matt Morris each hit a home run, while Keith Chatinover hit a bases-loaded triple.

Later in the afternoon, Vineyard Gray also defeated Fairhaven by the score of 8-7. Although Vineyard pitchers limited the Tigers to just one hit, they found themselves needing rallies in each of the last two innings for a come-from-behind victory. RBI singles by Harold Lawry and Jeremy Regan prefaced a walk-off RBI single by Jack Sierputoski with two outs in the bottom of the 7th to win the game.

Vineyard Black are now 3-1, while Gray are 2-2. Both teams compete in dual doubleheaders against teams from Acushnet and Rochester on Saturday, May 9, at the Martha’s Vineyard Shark Tank, also known as the high school field.
