To the Editor:

The second annual Tisbury School Wellness Day took place last Wednesday, June 10. With help from several volunteers from the Martha’s Vineyard community, as well as off-Island volunteers, school staff, and parent volunteers, the Tisbury School Wellness Day was a success.

The day was filled with activities and educational sessions, including hip-hop, nutrition, jumping rope, karate, yoga, Zumba, gardening, Coast Guard water and boat safety, classes with Tisbury Emergency Services, bike safety, parking lot safety, and tick and mosquito education with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. For participating in the day, all of the students were entered into a raffle for a chance to win one of numerous prizes, among which were three bikes and bike helmets donated by the Tisbury Police Association and Martha’s Bikes, the Tisbury School PTO, Brickman’s, and the Toy Box.

Many of the students in the upper grades participated in the harvesting from the school garden, and then the preparation of the school lunch for the day. Thanks to Claire Lafave from Island Grown Schools and the Tisbury School cafeteria staff, who prepared a locally sourced lunch with food from the Tisbury School garden, Morning Glory Farm, the Good Farm, the FARM Institute, and Thimble Farm.

The day was healthy and fun for not only the students, but for the teachers who participated in the classes as well!

Sincere thanks to all of the generous volunteers who gave their time to share with Tisbury School students an appreciation for health and wellness. Their help made this event possible and highly successful.
