To the Editor:
A big thank-you and shout-out to the West Tisbury Police Department, the West Tisbury Fire Department, and West Tisbury Animal Control. They were represented this summer at the West Tisbury library as part of the nationwide summer reading program “Every hero has a story.”
Ofc. Garrison Viera presented a thoughtful and through talk to young children and their families about his role as a policeman, showing some of the equipment he uses. His gentle and calm demeanor while explaining the use of pepper spray and handcuffs was so well done. As a showstopper ending, he opened up all the doors of the cruiser, allowing children to climb in and experience the thrill — blue lights flashing and all.
Joannie Jenkinson was here earlier in the summer to share some stories about errant horses, swans, and dogs … Unfortunately, her vehicle was in the shop!
Jesse Oliver covered everything fire-related, including his uniform, his equipment, and finally, an exciting ride in the Brush Breaker vehicle.
All of these people and their departments serve our town well, and are to be celebrated as local heroes. Their kindness toward children and their professionalism were evidenced in spades.
